What monitors to expect in 2022?

Svetlana February 02 2022

This year we expect an 8K monitor to hit the market, but it will be the only one of its kind. Many manufacturers such as Samsung, Acer, and Asus have announced such products, but there is no exact release date yet.

At the moment we can't really say anything for sure about this monitor series because it has not been released yet. After all, they will still be in development in 2022. When talking about resolutions and screen sizes, however, we expect to see 3840x2160 (Ultra HD), 4096x2160 (8K), and 5120x2880 (5K). We also expect to see these monitors with VA panels.

So, let`s check out famous brands and their new monitors (probably).

Samsung Neo G8

Technical specifications

This monitor is intended to be used mainly for gaming and features an extremely fast 240 Hz refresh rate, which is also overclocked. It has very thin borders and an elegant design.

The Neo G8 provides support for HDR and uses quantum dot technology. It has a 1800R curvature, thus providing more immersion than "usual" monitors. Other details include: resolution: 3840x2160, screen size: 32", panel type: VA, response time: 1 ms (GTG), color support: 1.07 billion colors, brightness: 350 cd/m².

Design&Connectivity

Samsung Neo G8 has a really thin look and feel. The stand has a red tone to it, which makes this monitor very stylish. The parameters are not different from other Samsung monitors, so it has the same aspect ratio, resolution, and so on. Its design is very "minimalistic" in pure Samsung fashion. It is furnished with a height-adjustable stand, also has ports like VGA, DVI, HDMI, and a headphones jack. The tilt angle of the monitor is -3,5°/22,5°.

Image and colors

This monitor has a very rich and vivid image. It has a high contrast ratio, so blacks are really black in darker scenes and the colors shine out in brighter areas. The monitor covers 100% of the sRGB color gamut which is fantastic for people working with multimedia content.

In this model, Samsung uses Quantum Dot technology, which enhances the image quality by creating even more realistic colors. With its VA panel, it has an impressive static contrast ratio of 3000:1. In addition to that, it can reach up to 5000:1 when used with HDR content (though we don't know if we will get any HDR-enabled games or movies). This creates even clearer and more accurate images by showing higher details in both light and dark parts of images.

Performance

Samsung Neo G8 has a very fast response time, so no ghosting will occur. Also, it has a high refresh rate which is 240 Hz and you can use Freesync with a range of 48-240 Hz. So for a more fluent gaming experience without image tearing or stuttering, Freesync is what you need.

Samsung Neo G8 would be perfect for playing games on a PC, console, or mobile phone thanks to different ports which are HDMI 2.0 , VGA, and DVI. In addition to that, it supports up to 120Hz which will result in even better performance when connecting via cable. You can always buy an adapter like this one if your device does not support HDMI 2.0 (there are plenty out there).

Input lag is a little higher than on other monitors, but it is not that important if you are going to play games. It's really low at 9,7 ms.

Acer X32 FP

Technical specifications

Acer X32 FP monitor has an ultra-wide 32" screen with a curvature radius of 1500R. Its panel type is VA and it has an extra-wide color gamut. Other specifications include: resolution: 3840x2160, screen size: 31,5" (UltraWide), panel type: VA, response time: 4 ms (GTG), color support: 1.07 billion colors, brightness: 300 cd/m²

Design&Connectivity

Acer X32 FP monitor has an excellent stand which you can adjust in height, tilt or swivel it to any direction. The connectors are placed below the stand. You will find DVI, HDMI, USB 3.0 andPort there. Its design combines both "minimalistic" and stylish elements. Its back is made of plastic with a carbon finishing which looks really nice. The stand is made of metal.

Since it's an UltraWide monitor, its aspect ratio is 21:9, which means you can watch movies in cinema format. If your content does not support 21:x ratio, you can change it through the On-Screen Display (OSD) settings. Also, you can choose between different picture modes like Standard, Game, or Movie.

There is only one option for brightness adjustment and 6 options for colors temperature (the last option, User mode, allows you to customize each color parameter manually). The X32 provides an ergonomic stand that offers height adjustability up to 130mm, tilt of -5°/20°, and swivel of 180° both ways. With these specifications, Acer must have included VESA mount compatibility with a standard 100x100mm pattern.

The backside of X32 FP is made of plastic with a carbon finishing which looks really nice. The stand definitely needs to be improved (it's definitely not good enough for such an expensive monitor).

Image and colors

Acer X32 FP has an extra-wide color gamut (100% sRGB, 100% REC 709, 97.6% DCI-P3) . Combined with the VA panel it provides a good image quality that would be perfect for games or movies. The colors are very vivid, so most people would find them natural enough. Since it has a YUV color spectrum you can watch HD videos the way they were meant to be seen. Pixel density is high (109 PPI) which results in a very detailed image. The images appear very crisp and the colors are well distinguished.

What's interesting is that you can use Acer VisionCare technology with Flickerless, BlueLightShield, ComfyView, and low-dimming technologies to make sure your eyes feel good while using the monitor for hours.

Performance

You can choose between three settings that affect the response time - Standard, Fast, and Super Fast. There is also an option for Overdrive under the 'picture improvement' section.

The manufacturer claims that X32 FP has a 4 ms response time which can be changed through one of the options in OSD. Even if it has low input lag (9,2 ms), some people might still notice image ghosting with certain content.

Switching to game mode helps a little, but it does not eliminate all stuttering or ghosting completely. Another interesting thing is that you can use Freesync technology with a variable range of 30-120 Hz. This monitor would be perfect for games if only the ghosting issues were fixed.

MSI MEG271Q

Technical specifications

MSI brand is spreading fast (they are really good at selling gaming products). MSI MEG271Q has an attractive design with thin bezels and it's curved 27" screen. Its stand allows you to adjust the height, tilt or swivel it in any direction.

The refresh rate is listed as 144 Hz but it's actually 144 Hz / 165 Hz (overclocking). It has a very fast response time - 1 ms (g-to-g) and the color support is 1.07 billion colors which is also an important feature. This monitor provides good image quality, even if the static contrast ratio is not that high (1000:1 vs typical 1000:1). There are 5 options for brightness level adjustment and 6 options for different picture modes.

Design&Connectivity

It was truly made with love because the curves on this monitor are so smooth and pleasant to the eyes. MSI MEG271Q has an ergonomic stand that provides height adjustment up to 130mm, tilt of -5°/20° each way, pivot (rotation), or swivel. There is VESA mount compatibility with a standard 100x100mm pattern. MSI MEG271Q monitor`s ports are fairly standard. You can find a DisplayPort 1.2 for 144 Hz, two HDMI 2.0 as well as D-SUB and DVI ports.

Image and colors

This monitor has very good image quality, but there are some flaws that need to be taken into account. Even if it has an IPS panel, viewing angles are not perfect - the colors shift when viewed from certain angles. Also, there is a possibility of perceiving a slight flicker especially in darker areas of the screen so it might be difficult to use this display at night.

Other than that it provides great image quality with accurate colors which appear vivid enough, sharpness and small details are perfectly distinguished. MSI MEG271Q also covers 97% sRGB color space which is standard for IPS panels, so you don't have to worry about the colors not being accurate.

MSI MEG271Q has a 100% sRGB gamut which means it can show almost all colors from green to red. The Adobe RGB gamut covers only 50%. If you need a wide gamut for professional work, you should definitely consider another monitor.

Performance

This is a gaming monitor after all. The image quality and colors are great for playing games, but not good enough if you plan to use it as a screen for design purposes like photo editing. One interesting thing about MSI MEG271Q is that it has an Eye-Care technology that lowers the blue light so your eyes don't feel tired after long gaming sessions.

It also has FPS mode which makes everything look brighter through the overdrive feature, so there are no problems with ghosting or stuttering anymore - this option should be turned off during normal work though because it causes the color accuracy to worsen. The input lag is low but not extremely low so you will notice it in fast-paced games.

LG 32UQ85R

Technical specifications

You might know that LG makes some of the best TVs in the world, but they also make monitors. LG 32UQ85R is a great budget option for people who are looking for an ergonomic monitor mainly made for work/studying which has good image quality and IPS panel. It has a 32" 4K screen with a decent response time - 6 ms (g-to-g) so no ghosting.

The color support provides 1.07 billion colors, 99% sRGB coverage, 20M:1 contrast ratio, and 8-bit depth. It might not have the most accurate colors out there because it has only 10 bits per channel compared to 12-16 from other models, but you should know this is typical for affordable IPS.

Design&Connectivity

The design is fairly simple but still looks nice. It's not flat because of the curve, but it doesn't have a big bezel which is great. The stand allows height adjustment up to 130mm, tilt, pivot, or swivel, and VESA mount compatibility. There are two USB 3.0 ports with a fast-charging feature.

There is an option for splitting the screen in half - Picture-by-Picture mode so you can use this monitor even if you only have one HDMI source device. Its stand allows users to rotate the screen.

You can tilt the monitor but it can't be raised. It doesn't have a VESA mount compatibility.

Image and colors

LG 32UQ85R has good image quality with accurate colors. It has an IPS panel so viewing angles are wide. You can see small details and there is no ghosting or stuttering even if you play games. There is also a 178°/178° horizontal/vertical viewing angle which means the picture won't look different to your eyes when viewed from the side. Pixel density is nice at 83ppi which guarantees sharpness.

The main disadvantage is that it can't display a 100% sRGB color gamut. If you work with photos the colors might appear a bit washed out, but good enough for playing games or watching movies. There is also only 8-bit depth so there are no gradients between different shades of one color which can be seen as banding.

Performance

Finally, when it comes to productivity, LG 32UQ85R is the best value monitor because of its accuracy, high resolution, and decent response time. You can view content in 4K UHD which has four times more pixels than 2K - just like regular Full HD monitors but on a bigger screen. Of course, it doesn't make much sense to do this if you sit close to the monitor or use it for daily work, but it's good to know that this option exists.

It has only a 6ms (g-to-g) response time, so ghosting might be visible when playing games. It's not as good as 1ms (black-to-white) or less response time from other models. You should consider that before purchasing an expensive gaming monitor.

All in all, LG 32UQ85R is a great value monitor which has accurate colors, high resolution, wide viewing angles, low response time, and FreeSync support for fast games with no stuttering or ghosting. Unfortunately, it can't display a 100% sRGB color gamut which might be a problem if you work with photos. Also, there is only 8-bit depth which means that there are gradients in-between shades of a color that can be visible as banding.
